Avast performance problems.

Hi

When I open Avast and I click on Scan Computer,Avast shows blank white window,I can,t use Avast for 2minutes

Have a nice day.

Yep , it happens to me too , not for 5 min. , only for 30 sec max , but it’s strange , it shouldn’t behave like this .
P.S. And the window doesn’t blank , it just hangs for 30 sec.

Same here but worse on my main computer. This prevents me from using avast! on that computer. Similar thing happens when right clicking on a file to check for a virus in Windows Explorer.

A little bit farther in avasts! 5’s history, I will try it again.

Here I don’t have that problem but I have already saw that problem on other’s computers.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

My problem must be different because I have done this many times with the same result.

Which results?

Do you or had you another av installed?
If so which one?
If not pleast run HijackThis and post the log here.
It may tells us something and if not, it will rule out a few possible causes.

Sorry- the hanging when trying to use scan. This is mainly on the computer that I use the most. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times and each time scan gives me problems. I cannot use avast! on that computer. I suspect that another program is causing the problem but which one?

I have avast! on four other computers (Pro on one and FREE on the others) – when clicking on scan, it takes a while for it to come up, it does work. I’m at a disadvantage here because this computer does not have avast! installed so it’s difficult to explain.

Now I have MSE on this computer but before that, all of my computers have had ONLY avast! since January of 2007–nothing else.

I’ll run HijackThis again and post.

I’m going to bump this so you can see the HiJack this results.

I see Adobe\Acrobat 7.0 that is way down level and very vulnerable to infections as Adobe Reader 9 is available:
http://www.adobe.com/products/reader

I do not use any Adobe products as they are the latest target of malware attacks.

I cannot afford to upgrade Acrobat but it is on other computers --remember this is Acrobat, not reader-- and there are no similar problems on those computers.

Anything else?

The Hjt log shows safe. No obvious problem entries.
Perhaps need to go to Internet Options in Control Panel and set a Start page for IE8 browser.
Also check Search Settings, and under the Advanced tab best running is restore settings to default.
There may be some connectivity issues.

The other thing is Zone Alarm. I’m not familiar with myself but there have been issues.

Thanks mkis, I ill take a look at that. I don’t use MSIE but I could set a start page. I have 5 computers and Zone Alarm Pro is on all of them and no issues.

A solution would be to reformat and reinstall but I am loathe to do that since it is so time consuming. I’ll just live without avast! on this computer.
