(reposting this due to the previous one being deleted. Apparently users aren’t allowed to be angry.)
Avast will periodically, and for no good reason cause my PC to come to a grinding halt for up to 10 minutes at a time.
The “Avast Service” eats up 25%+ of my CPU, however it is the incompetent usage of the DPC queue that is the problem.
The DPC is to be used tor time critical execution, such as media playback. Any queue length above 1000µs is a problem, over 4000µs media playback becomes severely problematic, with severe audio stutter and frame drops.
Avast doesn’t use 4000µs
No, Avast deems a mere 60 times that to be a fair usage of my PC’s resources, topping out at 150,000µs
That is a queue latency of 150 MILLISECONDS, where the max ought to be no more than ONE.
It grinds my PC so badly that it IS a show stopper. It is intolerable that ANYTHING else running at the time becomes inoperable, while an Avast BACKGROUND service is doing … something.
Even the mouse pointer becomes sluggish, and the Task Manager takes a good 10+ seconds to show up.
Avast.
IDLE-TIME BACKGROUND SERVICES DO NOT NEED TO USE DPC EVER!
OS: Windows 10 Professional
Avast Premium 10.3.2225
Your previous post was removed for use of foul language and you had basically replicated the same post in another topic which has now been removed since you decided to start another topic without the foul language, there is no rule saying you cant be angry but there is no excuse for foul language.
There is also no need for highlighted capitals, this is shouting and regarded as rude…less likely to get help with this attitude :
The highlighted part is reduced. However still highlighted, as it is a fairly logical thing that I’m afraid I’m seeing being abused far too often lately. Not just avast, but other services make use of the (I assume) convenience of the DPC, for heavy processes.
Plex Media server comes to mind.
Regardless of my attitude, it is a severe issue that is really a show stopper, that will force me to abandon Avast should it remain unresolved.
Please supply some system information including other security software installed, you may also like to run the FRST tool from the Virus and Worms board and attach the logs produced.
I gave the information needed, the OS and the Avast version.
The problem is Avast, what hardware and software I have apart from that is less of an issue.
I have isolated the main problem to the “Smart Scan” feature, and now I just need to know how to kill that permanently until Avast fixes it.
When Smart Scan runs, my computer becomes useless, and everything grinds to a halt. It’s a 1:1 correlation.
It is older hardware, but I haven’t had the issues with previous versions of Avast, leading me to conclude it’s one of those new things that just haven’t been tested yet. Yet pushed on users.
