I tried to install avast and norton 2006 on same comp and i found that norton restricted some functions of avast and not vice-versa…Is that the case when it is viruses vs Avast???
I think you understood it wrong. It isn’t Norton that restricted avast!'s functions (at least I think so) - it was avast!, disabling some of its functions automatically, so that the computer doesn’t freeze because of a conflict.
Having two resident scanners installed is not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable.
NAV as many posts in these forums will attest can have serious conflicts with other programs, it doesn’t co-exist well with other security programs.
When avast detects the presence of another resident AV it will disable some of its elements to avoid this conflict, which could lock-up your system. So it isn’t NAV restricting avast but avast taking precautions to avoid conflict and a possible system lock-up, etc.
You will have to make a choice and uninstall the other, NAV is also notoriously difficult to get rid of, often harder that removing a virus. So much so theat there is a removal tool. A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
Removing your Norton program using SymNRT
