Can Avast free run alongside other AV pretection software, because it looks very good and added resident protection can only be good news.
(windows XP sp2 system) using windows firewall, AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware, A Squared & Spywareblaster.

Welcome to the forum.
AV programs don’t work well together and neither do competing Firewalls.
If you want to try avast!, totally remove AVG and/or any other AV program. The resident portions conflict because they both try to access the same
programs that they are scanning at the same time.
You can have more than one antivirus scanner on your PC, just keep only one Resident Shield enable and disable any others. Keep avast! shield enable and turn off AVG’s shield (both Resident and Email if you can).
This is not truth for a lot of couples.
For instance: avast x NAV
Nowadays, avast x AVG won’t work too… the email scanner is on conflict until the begin of june… I did not test this after that time.
Oh yeah I almost forgot about Norton, that’s a killer. Yeah I guess even without the resident shield, some antivirus just doesn’t like second company. Anti Vir, you can just disable the active guard and keep along side with avast! I recommend that if you want a second antivirus.
If you just want another AV for a second opinion, you could always install ClamWin.
Since it’s not resident, there isn’t any problem with it.
You’ll find more information about it HERE.
Another backup (not resident) antivirus is BitDefender (free) (www.bitdefender.com)
Howdy Bob3160,
I have found the link to ClamWin too, and a on-line scanner of theirs. What is you opinion, and how do you evaluate this AV solution. Has it something extra because it was build on another philosophy all-together, together with another source of course. Please share your views with us here.
Thanks in advance,
polonus
I use it as a second opinion if and when avst! finds something. If ClamWin doesn’t consider the file as a virus and avast! does, then I submit it to Jotti.
I’ve never used it to do a Full Comparative scan.
Thanks for your tips guys, will have a look/play, (there’s always RESTORE !!) ???
Cheers all,
