Avast Premium fails malware test

I triggered 2 malware threats on a laptop with Avast Premium. I then performed a ‘Full Virus Scan’ and a ‘Boot-Time Scan’ and Avast found 0 threats. I had similar results with Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro however Spyhunter and Combo-Cleaner both found the threats and the latter removed them successfully. Pretty disappointed in Avast though. Wonder if I should keep paying for something that clearly doesn’t do its job.

Not knowing any details it is hard for anyone to respond.

e.g. what were the malware alerts, malware name, file name and location, etc.

Also if you are running a full virus scan did you change any of the default settings ?
If I remember PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) aren’t included in the default settings.

I would always do a screenshot of any avast alert (whilst the dark brown stuff hits the fan it isn’t something people think about). You could also check the Avast log files, C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\report and most likely the FileSystemShield.txt

DavidR: There were no Avast alerts therefore I didn’t bother with Avast logs. Used default settings for scans. There were numerous popups that appeared in my Win10 Desktop and Notification area which invited me to clickbait… The malware popups were not browser related. These are the actual threats that were quarantined:

defender-scanning.xyz ads Spam ~\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default
mykiger.com ads Spam ~\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

I’m confused, I thought you said:

I triggered 2 malware threats on a laptop with Avast Premium.
How were these malware (Spam) threats triggered then ?

Given your details:

defender-scanning.xyz ads Spam ~\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default mykiger.com ads Spam ~\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

I’m not entirely surprised as this SPAM category is unlikely to have been detected on any on-demand scan.
I can only assume you didn’t visit the sites.

Given they are in the Edge User Data area, I would wonder if these aren’t from an add-on/extension in Edge.

I have never used Edge, Firefox is my default browser, so I have no experience of it.

Just like DavidR says, doing a specific spam scan we get:
“We did not find any links in Google for your website -mykiger.com”.
But there is a lot relating to these ad-finds here:

Push browser notifications, and it could well be bing also flags it.
Although push notifications cannot harm you directly, scammers use them to display unwanted ads, promote fake software, and encourage you to visit scam pages. (Pop-ups may get you there, where you do not wanna go).
Quttera scanner also flags as suspicious: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/url/89f0b10b9be71b86d1a49158b8871555f82e8cb34b24ad79d19c3b9bd63673d6 (results from 2 hours ago). As this is the end-uri: -https://iqbroker.com/lp/regulated/?aff=283168
