Avast preventing Minecraft from even running

I searched, but didn’t find any other mentions of anyone having this problem. Up until just a few months ago, Avast had no problems with Minecraft, but suddenly it started preventing it from running with NO warnings or options to allow.

I can temporarily disable Avast shields and it starts just fine, and I’ve looked in the user interface trying different settings to ALLOW the Minecraft.exe to run, but to no avail. Has anyone else encountered this, and if so have you found a good workaround that doesn’t involve turning off your antivirus?

Avast Version: 6.0.1367
Minecraft Version: 1.2.5
Java Version: 6, update 26

Please update avast! to the latest version. (7.0.1426)
Also update your outdated Java…!!!

Okay, thanks for the suggestions

Tried them, but didn’t work. Updated both Java and AVast and still it’s preventing Minecraft from running. I suspect it’s something to do with the way Avast is interacting with Java, as I just had the task manager open when I tried running Minecraft and for a split second there was a process that appeared that was Ja…??? something or other, but Avast made a BEEP tone and the process vanished :frowning:

  1. You’re welcome.
  2. Well, if avast! would block it, you should see a notification. Also avast! doesn’t BEEP.

My son plays Minecraft both on and offline, we have used Avast since version 4 and he has never had any issue. Indeed he is at this moment playing online.

Win7 64Bit : avast7 AIS : Malwarebytes Pro etc.

I tell you, I’m NOT losing my mind…it BEEPED at me! LOL

Well, okay… it’s the XP “Critical Stop” sound, but that sounds like a beep on steroids to ME

And it almost HAS to be Avast… up until I disable the shield controls it “BEEPS” every time I try to run it, but once those shields are disabled, it fires right up no problem.

In the GUI you can shut down shields individually … find out which one is blocking and see if you can add an exclusion.

  • Which avast!..?? (Free/Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??

It’s the home FREE version, running on Windows XP SP3, 32bit
The only other security related software I run is ZoneAlarm, but again, I don’t see how it could be anything other than Avast as when the shields are up, Minecraft won’t run, turn the shields off and Minecraft will start up and run just fine (even after the shields kick back in after being disabled for 10 minutes).

Which version…??
Hope you only use the FW.

YES! Just the home free basic firewall (don’t EVEN get me started on people who run 2 or 3 antivirus software packages at the same time on their PC! grrr!! lol)

Please follow Adrian’s advice from Reply #6.

FOUND IT!!! Thank you SO much AdrianH!!!

It was the Behavior Shield that was blocking Java from launching Minecraft.

The exception I added was: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe and it works like a charm now!

That’s the first time I have seen a report of the Behavior Shield blocking anything.

I had the same problem with minecraft. Entering javaw.exe as an exception in the behavior shield allowed minecraft to work with no problems.

I am also having this problem. Apparently this has been a problem for years?

Other people have fixed the same problem by adding an exception for java to the behavior shield.

That might have happened, but it ran, just really laggy and I couldn’t move my mouse… etc.
