Avast preventing Windows 7 from booting - have run FRST

Hi there!

I encountered this forum when I was trying to find ways to fix my computer, a Lenovo G570 running Windows 7 (64 bit), which was no longer booting. This is because, when I tried to boot in safe mode, it seemed to freeze when loading aswRvrt.sys (or at least, that was the last driver to load.)

I followed the instructions in this thread - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140353 - up to the point of uploading/running the fix list through FRST (the 64 bit version) from the command prompt. I replaced the following from said fix list with the locations/references to my own machine:

HKLM-x32\...\Run: [avast5] - C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exe [4858968 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S2 avast! Antivirus; C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastSvc.exe [46808 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S2 aswFsBlk; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswFsBlk.sys [33400 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S2 aswMonFlt; C:\Windows\system32\drivers\aswMonFlt.sys [80816 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S1 aswRdr; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswrdr2.sys [72016 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S0 aswRvrt; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswRvrt.sys [65336 2013-08-29] () S1 aswSnx; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswSnx.sys [1030952 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S1 aswSP; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswSP.sys [378944 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S1 aswTdi; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswTdi.sys [64288 2013-08-29] (AVAST Software) S0 aswVmm; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswVmm.sys [204880 2013-08-29] ()

but could not find the remainder:

C:\ProgramData\PKP_DLes.DAT C:\ProgramData\PKP_DLet.DAT C:\ProgramData\PKP_DLev.DAT C:\Users\Marlene\gotomypc_533.exe C:\Users\Marlene\gotomypc_540.exe C:\Users\Marlene\lametritonus_en.dll C:\Users\Marlene\lame_enc_en.dll

in my version of FRST.txt, and as such did not include them in the fix list. When I tried rebooting after the fix, I found that it was still refusing to boot.

I have just run FRST (the scan function) again, and have attached this new FRST.txt. With that in mind, I was wondering if anyone is able to help me with the following:

  1. Is there still an obvious problem that could be solved by running another fixlist, and if so what should be in that fix list?
  2. If this doesn’t work, is my only option to reinstall Windows 7? Or is there another problem which I can fix/look into? Or even…
  3. Could this be just a failing hard drive, and should I just cut my losses and start saving for a new HD/laptop?

I’d be so grateful if anyone is able to help me!

Thanks a lot

Unfortunately all fixes are specific to one system, the one you used was for a 32bit I believe.

From the command prompt could you try chkdsk c: /r

Hi there! Thank you for your reply.

Yeah, I realise that was a stupid move - it was the act of a desperate man!

I get home from work in 2 hours - I will do this as soon as I get home and post the result.

OK, I’ve attached the result of chkdsk c: /r to this post - does anything seem wrong here?

No the error 50 means that you ran chkdsk from the recovery console is all

Have you tried a system restore at all

Yep, restored it to the most recent point and then to the furthest back point - neither worked

OK lets try one more fixlist, I am going to amend the winlogon… Then entry is legitimate but it appears to be one command short

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
On completion try a normal boot

IT WORKED! I cannot thank you enough for this fact. Am I okay to make sure avast is uninstalled and then do a clean reinstall - that’ll work, and undo any damaged done by my misguided attempt at fixing it myself? And is there anything else I need to do to remedy the episode completely? Thank you so much again!

Just do a clean install as there do not appear to be any Avast files left over

Fantastic, shall do
