last week I had a computer hang on boot up after power down a day before. I tracked that down to avast. After uninstalling in safe mode all went fine again. It was short before Easter so I didn’t use the computer until yesterday. I heard about some problems with MS patch day last week so I decided reinstall avast from a clean download yesterday with registry modifications according to MS. Any reboot after that reinstallation works fine but today morning when powering up that machine same things occure. Strange enough: use last safe known configuration (? translated from german) on boot up worked for me only once. After that only safe mode and deinstallation made the machine working again. Anyone else with a problem like that?
I had a failure message in the events log related to avast so I decided to deinstall it and the problem was gone (I thought, see below).
Have (or did) you had any other AV installed on this computer, if so what (and how was it removed) ?
No, not silmultaneously. I had Antivir installed before I decided to use Avast but I removed it before the installation of avast.
I assume you are using windows XP ?
You are assuming right.
And now here’s my personal walk to Canossa: I think it was only some kind of coincidence because today morning I had the same hang and deinstalling avast didn’t fix it this time. I did a system rebuild to the restore point prior to last MS patch day and now things work fine including avast. Sorry for that.
You need to examine fully the event log entry as there is often reference to, the Faulting program: and the Faulting Module: Often the Program calls a module which isn’t a part of avast (or that particular program) and that is sometimes the cause of the fault, not the calling program.
No problem, the main thing is that your problem is sorted.
