Avast Pro 4.7 doesn't support my NEC LCD?: Boot-Time Scan shows blank on the LCD

I am using an external NEC LCD display on my Dell Inspiron laptop. This is so because the Inspiron laptop’s display is dead - another story which I prefer not to discuss further.

Problems: The external display does not show the boot-time scan screen when running Avast Boot-Time Scan. Hence there is no user interaction is possible when virus is found. The external display is attached to my Inspiron via video connector.

When I hit Fn+F8 (CRT/LCD) once, the external display will show nothing. Again, nothing again.

My external display is an NEC MultiSync LCD1850E

I am using:
Recommended Resolution:
1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz

Really it’s about time run Avast Boot-Time Scan…
Any hints? Thank you!!!

Using: avast! version 4.7 Professional

Build: Jun2006 (4.7.844)
Xtreme Toolkit version 1.9.4.0
Using ActiveSkin version 4.2.7.3

Compilation date: 07/28/2006

avast shouldn’t be concerned with what your monitor is your monitor support prior to windows boot should be down to default video drivers, etc. since the resolution isn’t an issue pre boot as it is unlikely that it will use 1280 X 1024, even in safe mode the monitor resolution is 800 X 600.

This is just supposition on my part as I don’t have a laptop with an external monitor or dual monitors for that matter, so I can’t test it.
I think that your problem is that the external monitor isn’t supported by your laptop until windows boots and the video driver recognises a second monitor. Prior to boot I think the only monitor that would be recognised would be the laptop one and as you say that one is kaput.

Unfortunately I can’t suggest anything to get round this, but you could enquire at your local computer store/tech shop.

Thanks for the reply David. Nice talkingwith you again:)
Well, right now I am having the problem with some apps that do jobs during boot-time. For example, I am also having the problem with PerfectDisk 7. Neverthless, I don’t have problem with Acronis True Imaege 9.1 boot CD. The True Image’s boot loader is based on Linux. Not sure how relevant what I am writing is but…

I will update my laptop’s video driver - NVidia GeForce Go5200 64MB, and maybe confirm with other Inspiron users.

I’m not sure that simply updating the video driver will make much difference (as that is essentially a windows driver available when windows loads) as this is a much lower level driver. The True Image Linux boot loader is probably loading a driver at that point because it can’t take advantage of the hardware drivers.

Good Luck.
