I’ve always believed that only one AV should be used at a time, but am wondering if it is OK, (and if so of any advantage), to run both Avast Pro and Defender together on the one computer?

No, imo. Which OS…?
Hi Bill
First and for all : Windows Defender on Win 8 and 10 is full Anti Virus, while on Win XP, Vista and 7 it is an aditional Anti Spyware.
Windows Defender on Win 8 and 10 : Running two full Anti Virus programs is bad idea https://blog.kaspersky.com/multiple-antivirus-programs-bad-idea/
Windows Defender on Win XP, Vista and 7 : It doesn’t do that much.
A better option would be to replace it by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
