Avast Pro and Windows Search Tool Error

I have been able to recreate the error now time and again with Avast and Windows Desktop Search tool. When both application are running and a virus is received. The Avast window pops up then as soon as its gone Outlook gives me a error and has to restart.

So if you run Avast and Windows Desktop Search beware that it will crash Outlook 2003 if Avast finds a virus. I am not sure the developers read this but this is something that should be addressed.

If you do not run both applications at the same time then you are fine. I find that difficult because I need a virus program and my search tool is indexing my hard drive while I am away from keyboard.

Isn’t MS Desktop Search still a beta release? Perhaps that needs to be made known to MS.

No Desktop Search is not beta. Avast is the only program that has issues with it thus far.

This is still a problem with version 2.02 of Windows Desktop Search.

It doesn’t seem to be virus related for me. Deleting or moving an email will cause Outlook to crash. It has been reported on the MSN Search Newsgroup page.

I hope it gets fixed soon!

I suppose the deletion or movement of an email must cause the windows desktop search to attempt to re-index its database and for some reason causes Outlook to crash.
This process is obviously different from a normal file being deleted or moved within the windows file structure because it is a file in its own right. Unlike deleting an email which is a small part of the larger email folder file .pst?

That would make sense. I’ve discovered that sometimes I can delete email and work as normal before Outlook crashes. Presumeably the desktop search doesn’t try to index email all the time and the problem only occurs when it attempts its next re-index.

I’ve also been seeing this same error - I too have MSN desktop search and Avast! running together - it’s been driving me mad, everytime an email is moved Outlook crashes. My Outlook version number is reported as being slightly higher, but the error is the same:

Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.6565.0, stamp 42cacc7d, faulting module oleaut32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, stamp 411096f3, debug? 0, fault address 0x00004ba4.

I have tried switching off desktop search whilst Outlook is open - it certainly seems to stop the problem, so it’s definetely an incompatability issue somewhere!

It is a confirmed bug in the current release version of MSN Desktop Search. If you drop me an email, I can give you a pre-release version of MSN Search that has the problem fixed (supplied to me by MS engineering staff). Unfortunately, I can’t directly publish a download link as I have promised them not to do so.

Thanks
Vlk

Any news regarding this issue?
I have avast! Home 4.7.817 and Windows Desktop Search 02.05.0001.1119 crashes my Outlook XP 2002
10.2627.6714 SP3 every time a new email is received.
Here is what I get from EventLog: Faulting application outlook.exe, version
10.0.2627.1, faulting module oleaut32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault
address 0x00004ba4.

Any suggestions?

Thanks and Regards,
