ok, I’m new user here, just bought avast 5.0 but cant open the avastlic.liscense file. After you finish laughing at me, please help me to a resolution. thx
No need to open it - just double click it and it will install itself ;D
mine says not a valid win32 application. I’m running windows vista
Then leave it where you saved it on your hard disk, open avastUI (left click on the avast icon), Maintenance, Registration. From here click the Insert avast Pro / Internet Security license file, you should now have an explorer style navigation window, point it at where you saved the avastlic.license file.

sorry 'bout the crosspost, won’t happen again. However, I have saved it to the desktop but when I try to “obtain” my license it says what program to open but none work. So I never see the avast icon.
So have you downloaded and installed avast yet ?
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
Until avast is installed there will be no file association in windows for avastlic.license so it would ask what program to use to open it.
If you have installed avast and there is no icon in the notification area then there is something wrong with the installation. Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
ok windows defender was blocking (who knew), have it installed but status is a 30 day trial. Where can i find my license number.
You don’t have a license number for avast5 but a license file avastlic.license, which you say you have.
OK, now that you have the avast icon (assuming you stopped WD blocking it) - Have you followed the suggestion I gave about inserting the license file from within the avastUI ?
I would also suggest you download the quick start .pdf file and read the knowledge link that I gave earlier.
I downloaded the knowledge base, turned off WD, and i inserted the license file into the proper slot. message says not a valid avast license and status remains 30 days.

Thank you for your patience. As a result of downloading multiple times, i had several license files. Through trial and error I found the right one. unfortunately the pages you sent didn’t mention this problem so maybe i am one of a very few to have experienced this. Thank you for your help and i hope to not bother you again, though I reserve the right to try should the need arise. again, thx
Thank you for your help and i hope to not bother you again, though I reserve the right to try should the need arise. again, thxcfosternow, This is a help forum. you haven't bothered any one and are welcome to ask questions or help others if you're able. Welcome to avast! and the forum.
You’re welcome.
Well the page I sent you to is for general registration information following that just shows the two methods (preferred & alternative) of inserting the license file. It isn’t a fault finding tool, so it doesn’t really give any trouble shooting advice.
The main thing is that presumably you now have avast 5.0 Pro installed and the license file inserted.
