Avast Pro causes WinXP to hang during start up.

I ran Avast Free for 5 years without any problems. After a brief stint using Kaskpersky, I recently installed Avast Pro. I ran the Kaspersky removal tool prior to installing Avast again. I have been having problems with Avast Pro causing my WinXP machine to hang at the black Windows splash screen with the scrolling blue bar whenever I reboot. If I boot into Safe Mode and remove Avast, the machine restarts without issue. I have also been using the Avast removal tool and restarting again prior to reinstalling Avast. This has happened numerous times recently. I have gone back to Avast Free for the time being and everything seems to be fine.

My computer is rarely restarted or turned off unless required by an error or update. I read another post where a guy was having a similar issue and he attributed it to a conflict with his secondary ATI video card. I only have one video card and am running Omega drivers for it.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Into windows events, any info that could help?

Nothing that really stands out. What should I be looking for? I’m not familiar with the logs.

Errors in system or applications.
Maybe running the Kaspersky uninstall again could make we sure that nothing (specially drivers) was left behind.

@stoon
Have you got this issue resolved? I received a call last month from one of my customers running Avast Avast about the exact same thing. It was running fine for over a year then after and update this started happening.

I went into msconfig and disabled a bunch of processes that I couldn’t identify from running on startup and that fixed the problem but with every update the problem re-appears.

Very annoying to have to go through this exercise every time.

Cheers.
