Avast Pro finds infected files cleaner does not!

I am new to Avast! I just ran version 4.6 of Pro (standard mode). It found 4 infected files I then downloaded and ran Cleaner Tool. It did not find any infected files. I nest ran a thorough mode search. It found 8 infected files. I reran Cleaner. It still found no infected files. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Here is the link of all the viruses that avast! virus cleaner can detect and remove: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_cleaner.html

Thanks for answering so quickly.

Nubie question: The report at the end of the scan only said that there were 8 infected files. Where do I find details (such as which viruses)?

If you send the infected files to the virus chest, you can further investigate.

I opened the chest but it was empty. During the scan I was informed that a virus was found. When asked I chose to delete it. I’ll run a scan overnight and see what the report turns up in the morning.

avast! Virus Cleaner is designed to clean only certan, limited range of malware. Mostly the one most widely spread. For total protection agains daily malware you have to use avast! Home or Pro edition.

Check avast’s Log Viewer, right click the avast icon and select avast! Log Viewer and check the sections in there.

I ran Avast Pro 4.6 again overnight (Thorough Scan). It stopped on a “Virus Found!” message. It was a: Win 32: Baltrans-B worm. I selected “delete all”.

The log viewer is empty even though I have run two previous scans that resulted in infections found.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is there nothing in the Warning section?
I have some test ones from ages ago, see image.

If not Check your Logging Settings in Program Settings, see image.

You can also check the Win XP Event Viewer, Antivirus (assuming you have XP).

P.S. Delete all is not always the best option, say a system file is incorrectly detected and you delete it?
First do no harm, send to chest and investigate, if it proves to have been an incorrect detection you can restore it from the chest.

The avast logs will store all the information on each section above the slider level.
I mean, you set the Notice level and will store every log above: Warning, Error, Critical Error, Alert and Emergency.
If you set Debug you will have the most capability of logging 8)
Oh, I forget, more logs, more verbose… more bla, bla, bla… the user could get alarmed for nothing…

Thanks to all for your help.

Moving right along… I found the log files. Under “warning” there were four viruses or other malware listed. I am trying to follow the directions on the Avast! site to deal with each: Win32 Badtrans-B (two times) , Win32 Nimda (drp) and VBS: Malware (Script).

Badtrans and Nimda are listed on the “Cleaner” list. I still do not know why Cleaner can’t find them.

Where they listed as being, was it a URL location or was it a location on your HDD?

If as I said the detection was by the Web Shield provider and you aborted the connection (default, only option), then they were blocked by web shield and aren’t on your HDD.

They were all on the local hard drive. I tracked them down and deleted them. I haven’t taken any additional action (messing with the registry scares me). That’s why I was hoping to have Cleaner do the heavy lifting.

Avast is rerunning a “Thorough Scan”. I’ll know the new status in a couple of hours.

Hi All,

Just an update: Now that I am familiar with the Avast! interface I was able to track down the infected files and delete them. Still, I didn’t have the ability to repair the damage done. I found http://www.geekstogo.com/. There is a lot of help there. I was able to scrub my system but I was not able to access “Help & Support”, “Search”, “Windows Update” or “System Restore” in XP Pro SP2.

Believe it or not, Microsoft provides FREE telephone support for this. The directed me to a download that restored my system.

Phew… What a week!

I do not use this machine for email but I had saved an Outlook archive on it. That was where the malware was hidden. The oldest dated back to 2002. I run (ran) Norton Antivirus at least two times a week. It never found them! It may have kept them from activating but it would have been better if it found and deleted them. I only found them when I switched to Avast!

Arnie, this is ‘normal’… Avast Pro have more power than the standalone Cleaner.
Not all infections could be cleaned/repaired so, avast detects all but can clean only [/i] some (the ones into the Cleaner).

Thanks.

I realize that Cleaner is not a replacement for Avast! Pro. As stated above, two of the Viruses were listed as accessible to Cleaner. It just didn’t find them though Pro did. That was the reason for my original post.

I am now convinced that Avast! is indeed superior to NAV and will register a copy of Pro.

I just made the last post in gratitude to hopefully give a little back for the help I received.

Great forum! 8)

You won't get an argument here about that, many ex Norton users.

Were happy to help, and your feedback will probably help others especially the link to geekstogo.com.

And a belated welcome to the forums.

Nice…
We hope that Alwil team recognize our (the users) effort too 8)

The main question is: where was the virus found originally? (i.e. what was the full path of the infected file/object?)
