I have been using Avast free for years with no problem. Finally paid for and upgraded to Pro. Now my browser IE8 faills to connect unless I turn off the Mail Shield… not quite the point.
Anyone got any bright ideas?

Can you just state what is your Operating System?
Did you installed avast! Pro from scratch or upgraded from FREE version?

Strange that you actually mention the Mail Shield as that has nothing to do with your Browser, it should be the Web Shield if anything that would get in the way.
Essentially the web shield in the free or pro versions are the same so should react in the same way.
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Unless you are using the XP firewall, which has zero outbound protection, it shouldn’t be the issue. So which firewall are you using ?
Yep as David said, do you use another firewall like Comodo, ZoneAlarm, Online Armor… etc.? Can you just mention security softwares you are using currently?
