Hi everyone, I am using Avast pro for a long time. Recently i am unable to update avast. I don’t get the “avast have been updated” notification ever. I connect the laptop in my University using a proxy. I have attached a picture of the update page please see it and kindly suggest some solution.
Thanks for the reply Pondus. I can not update avast whenever i am behind proxy, even though i have specified the proxy in the setting. Update happen automatically whenever i connect the computer directly to internet in my home. But from some days due to my work i am mostly spending time in my institution behind proxy so it is becoming a problem. Is there a solution?
Also can you kindly explain the meaning of the information shown in my screen capture posted in my OP. It says

Now i want to know when is the last update i have received in my computer is it 24 jun 14 or 31 jul 14. Also since connection status is established so avast is connected to the internet but it is somehow unable to receive virus defination update.
Sorry for the delayed response Pondus. I am not sure if i am getting the update properly. I have the streaming update option enabled as you can see from the attachment. This attachment is from today, please go through it and kindly confirm if the Virus defination update is up to date or is it five six days old as the virus defination release date indicate it to be from 1 Aug 2014 also i am having trouble to update avast to the lattest version 9.0.2021.
Go to the admin that runs the proxy and have him solve it.
Internet is working fine and avast showed status as connected as you can see from the attached picture so i don’t think it is a problem from the Admin. I think some virus is stopping the update process. Is there a way to be sure ? A scan from malwarebyte anti malware showed that system is clean.
Avast update doesn’t work properly behind proxy anymore. It’s like that for the past couple releases, I think since first 9.0.X. The latest version doesn’t work behind proxy at all - the service simply refuses to start. See my post here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=152012.msg1113789#msg1113789. I have reported about these proxy problems about a year ago, but nothing happened.
I hope someone will finally get this fixed, as the current situation is getting unbearable.

If this is true then it is a very serious problem and avast should immediately fix this. I think you are right and this might be the actual problem, because in my lab i have suggested and installed avast free to a few friends and i have never been able to resister them online so i always go for offline reregistration. Is this also because of the proxy? Can someone from avast clear this situation up?
avast does work if you are behind a proxy server.
Just provide the proxy details in the settings.
If it doesn’t work, it can be a problem with the proxy server.
No, it doesn’t work properly anymore. Have you really tried behind a firewall which prevents direct access with non-transparent proxy installed? Not behind an optional proxy with direct access actually enabled, or behind a transparent proxy?
I am using avast for many years, and it always worked fine with a proxy. But some time ago it stopped. For some bits, it now requires direct connection. You can clearly check the TCP traffic to see this is the case.
Try for example accessing the Help → Support from the Avast UI. In my case it tries to make direct connection to 78.46.89.183 (a898he.avast.com), but makes no attempt to connect there via the proxy before timing out and saying “The content is temporarily unavailable, please try again later”. The same goes for the avast service which now fails to start without direct access to the ranges I have mentioned.
So please stop telling us the problem is elsewhere and have someone finally fix it.
Well finally i submitted a support ticket to avast. They suggested repair or re installation. I tried repair the process successfully completed but update problem remained so i uninstalled avast using avast uninstaller in safe mode. Then i downloaded avast pro from the link they provided. After installation i am facing a new problem. Now avast trey ion has a red cross and it said “you are unprotected-Avast service is off” clicking resolve all does not help. So basically i am without a antivirus right now. Please help. Hitman pro scan and MBAM free scan showed no infection.
Make sure you have the Avast file stored somewhere on your HDD. Try this uninstaller tool to remove all traces of remnants http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/, then reboot. Install Avast, register, set your settings and reboot again.
Make sure nothing in your firewall is blocking Avast.

Thanks for the link but after using avast clean up tool 1.3 the problem is still the same. After reboot avast is still showing unprotected- avast service is off.
