Avast problem with Outlook 2007 (Ultimate version)

I have a very annoying problem with my computer and Avast. Every time I activate my Outlook/Exchange Provide in in Avast 4.8.1335, my Outlook will either hang or suddenly crash very shortly thereafter. Sometimes it’s minutes, sometimes it’s dozens of minutes, but not more than a couple of hours until a crash. I use windows XP Media Center with Outlook 2007 Ultimate Version.

I’ve had this Dell Dimension 4700 computer for several years now, with various different anti-virus suites, and never had a problem until I instailled Avast. I noticed that if I simply deactivate the Outlook/Exchange Provider in Avast, the problems go away, and Outlook resumes working as it always did (after a restart, of course).

For a while, Outlook was crashing so often that I was forced to turn off the email scanning in Avast. My event logs are packed with events of “application failed” or “application hang”, entries, and they are all for Outlook.

I’m sure I don’t have any spyware/malware as I have other protection (Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, & Windows Defender) installed and I do regular searches.

Any hints for what I can do to allow Avast to work with Outlook 2007?
