Avast program has been stopped. Cannot restart.

Came home from vacation today and found the message that avast has been stopped and I haven’t been able to restart. Any suggestions?

Tried to start from the command prompt and now get the message that the program started and then stopped.

Please be more specific…!

The Avast interface says that the program has been stopped and my system is unsecured. The “Fix it” button has no effect. I tried starting from the services window and got the message that the program had started and then stopped again. Using Firefox 5.0.

  1. Reboot.
  2. There’s no FF 5.0

Firefox 3.6.3. Looking at the wrong spot.

Tried rebooting already.

  1. Reboot again.
  2. Try repairing avast… (control panel/software)

Please also post your OS, and any security programs (including removed AV’s) installed, whether active or not.

Im also having the same problem, but im using IE 8 and Windows Vista. I downloaded the new Yahoo messenger but then had to delete it sense it was messing up my whole system. I created a restore point of 5-31 and it worked but now I cant get Avast to start. Pretty much as the other man’s problem.

Did you get any error message? Could you post a screen shot…!?
asyn

Nope. no error. Just refuses to start even after clicking the fix. Keep getting the this program needs permission to continue. I click the continue and it just go back to the unsuccured. Dont know how to make a screen page, sorry.

Are you logged in with admin rights…? If not, do so…!
asyn

Dont know how to do that either. Im not computer smart like that.

Please consult your OS help. (integrated)
Start—> Help and Support (or similar)
Search for information on user accounts (admin account)
asyn

Ohhh ok. Well it says I am the admin.

Good…! So as you are the admin…

  1. Reboot
  2. Update avast manually
  3. Report back
    asyn

Tried that. Gives me a message saying failed to update. The avast! service is not running.

Which other security software is/was installed on your system…? (AVs/Firewall/etc.)
Please remove all other resident AV completely from your system…!
To remove avast for a clean reinstall you can use this in safe mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
asyn

If you want to avoid all the hassles just go to control panel then add remove programs and choose avast. Uninstall the whole program. After that is done if you have some utility cleaner like ccleaner or advanced system care 3 run any one of these programs to clean out any leftover registry entries related to avast. Then download the latest avast version and do a clean install. When you are done you can thank me. (ha ha) Seriously this method works 99 percent of the time. Let us know what happens. Have a good day.

@ RJWellman,

I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install to fix your problems as Asyn suggested.

Please follow these instructions:

[b]Save a copy of newest version of Avast /b.

Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility on your hard drive.

Disconnect from the Internet at this time.

Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.

Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly until it boots into Safe Mode) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.

Reboot twice.

Clean your computer up with something like free CCleaner Slim with no toolbar http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.

Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.

Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro or AIS.

Reset your settings, if needed.

Run a scan (try a Full System Scan initially to check for malware).

Please let us know if you have any further questions or problems after completing the above.
