Avast program stopping

Hi

I have a continual problem with version 5.0.507 where the program stops and I have to “fix now” because system is unsecured. It happens more on my Vista machine than my Windows 7 machine. It also brings up connection errors in Firefox.
Please advise how I can fix this.

Which was your old firewall? How did you uninstall it?
I suggest an avast installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

My PC came with Norton originally. I used the Norton de-installer to make sure all was removed.
I have followed your instructions and also de-installed Avast V5 with the de-installer tool and re-installed v5.0499. The program has stopped running again. Basically nothing has changed…

Please advise what to do next.

Strange… maybe your computer is infected and it’s blocking the correct installation of avast.
But, also to be sure, run Norton uninstaller again… ::slight_smile:

Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Dr. Web
  2. Avira
  3. BitDefender
  4. Kaspersky
  5. F-Secure

Hi

I used Avira as per the instructions and it found no threats. I also get errors when receiving email with an attachment.
