On boot this morning, Avast put my WordPerfect executable (wpwin9.exe) in the virus chest. I can’t find the Chest anywhere in the Avast interface, or in the program folder. Searched the forum before posting. The most recent result is from 2012, and that info is no longer valid because the interface has changed.
How do I get my word processor back?
Using Avast Free 2015.10.0.2208 on a WinXP SP2 eMachines T6524, AMD 3500+.
Yes, I should have updated - but these large files are almost impossible to get over dial-up. Torrenting would be great, but don’t have that or any decent access to high-speed. Same goes for Avast.
On the plus side, my virus definitions are up to date, I also have a firewall, use MBAM, and use safe browsing practices.
I am aware of the issues involved, and will update everything when I can back-up my HDD, and when I can use my laptop and someone’s high-speed connection to download the proper files.
Avast File System Shield has blocked a threat.
No further action is required.
Object: C:\Programs\Office.…\wpwin9.exe
Infection: Win32:Malware-gen
Action: Moved to chest
Process: C:\Programs\Security.…\PFGUI.exe
The threat was detected and blocked just before the
file was opened.
Used the instructions you linked to and used the “Restore and add to exclusions” option. Tried to run it from the menu shortcut, and AVAST ate it again. This time the warning message was the same as above, with the exception of:
Process: C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
I have been using WordPerfect on this PC for several years without incident. No idea why it’s suddenly a problem.
