Avast randomly does not start with windows bootup.

Hello, first time poster.

So ive had avast for years now, years and years. Ever since i “upgraded” to avast 2014 id say half the time it does not start up with windows and does not give me the reassuring “avast virus database has been updated” lol. Its not that it only does not start up, but if i try and manually open avast nothing happens, literally nothing happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice and the same behavior happens no matter what. Sometimes avast starts with my PC and i get the icon in the hidden icons menu in windows 7 (the new one that says everything is good) and some days avast simply does not start with my PC.

Does anyone have this issue as well? Like i just restarted my PC again and still nothing, no avast to be seen. But tomorrow it will work find and dandy, i think the problem is the new 2014 version of avast, is there a way i can get the old one back because this one seems quite buggy.

Welcome to the Avast forum Scotty99

I am sorry about your issues and I will try to help you solve them.

I had recently had the exact issue with my Avast Internet Security. Not seeing the Avast icon in the bottom tray really scares you, as you do not know if your Avast is active or not. I decided to use the Repair option for Avast thank goodness that fixed my issue. If you are interested into trying the Repair option, please follow these instructions.

There is a Avast Repair option in the Add/Remove programs in your computer that would solve most issues with Avast.

Click on “Start”, find “Control Panel” and click on it. A new window will open. Scroll down until you see Programs, click on it. Another panel will open up, you should see at the top Programs and Features, click on it and another panel will open up. Scroll down until you see Avast Internet Security, once you find it, right click it (hover your mouse over it will say Uninstall/Change). Once you click it another panel will be shown from Avast. Their will be several options for you to choose from. On the left side there will be shown the following. Update, Change, Repair, and Uninstall. Click on REPAIR and follow the instructions. This should fix any issues you have with Avast.

Please let me know if this corrects your issues.

Like i stated its random on the days it chooses to start up and the days it wont, today it chose not too again. I just ran the repair and nothing happened even tho it said update applied successfully, i even restarted my PC to make sure. So i have uninstalled twice and done the repair option now and neither of those worked. Like i said whenever i wrote this post until today it has worked fine, but today avast did not start and no matter what i do it will not open on my pc, even if i click run as admin nothing happens when trying to open avast. If i open task manager under processes it says there is an avastui.exe32 running but its simply no where to be found on my PC.

Something that you could try is rebuilding the icon cache:

There’s a guide here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Then try resetting notification area: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/13102-notification-area-icons-reset.html

Then reboot. You’ll then need to choose the icons that you like to display in the notification area: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/293-notification-area-icons-hide-show-system-icons-notifications.html

Hopefully you will now see the Avast icon with the usual click/ right click options.
