Avast red panel at boot time.

Hello all,

My PC is an Windows XP Pro Sp2, and I have Avast 4.8 Home free edition.
My config is the following : 1 PC and a laptop, all 2 linked to the Internet
via a local small Wifi connection (router), and a modem connected to the
cable (cablecom.ch). I have also the ZoneAlarm firewall free edition.

—(cable)—(modem)—(router) ……PC
¦ ……laptop

At boot time, sometimes I receive, instead of the blue rectangular telling me
that the virus data base has been updated (along with the gentle voice), a
red rectangular warning me that I have a connexion problem. At boot time, I normally
receive also some ZA alerts, that I acknowledge usually, among these the attemp from
Avast trying to connect to Internet. I observe also at the lower right screen corner a
little deskstop icon with a yellow round point movind from left to right and right to left
and moving the mouse arrow on it tells me that the PC is currently “reading the network
address” (as translated from french).

My problem is the following : if I acknowled immediately the Avast request to access the
Internet, I will received the red panel most certainely ; if I wait long enought until the
yellow moving dot has finished to move, it appears to be OK, and eventually, I will receive
the blue panel from Avast.

This is just a small annoyance, but I am wondering if there is a way to avoid it. I noticed
some Avast configuration possibilities with a proxy, but I do not know if my router really
behaves as a proxy (at installation time, I just followed the setup instructions) : all I know
is that my IP address can change time to time when I power up my router before asking
for the boot.

(Sorry, I know nothing about network configuration and theory). :-[

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe ZA is not keeping the avast.setup entry into the allowed programs to connect.
You can click ‘Settings’ in my signature and browse for option of always connect startup update delay.

Your cable internet uses a dynamic IP. I used a D-link router with DSL, it worked fine. I’m now on cable internet with a dynamic IP. D-Link wouldn’t work with it. I went out & bought a Belkin router. It works great with a dynamic IP. Belkin has the easiest set up I’ve ever used.

Dynamic IP’s change IP often. You must use a router that works with the changes.
