Avast removal leaves license key prompt on start up

Hello everybody, don’t know if anybody could help a newbie, or even if I’m on the right forum!

Was trying to help out a family member remove his Avast 4 free software from his Windows Vista pc, and used the avast removal tool.

However, now on start up I get a small splash screen saying Avast!: License key is not entered.

Assuming it’s a residue of the program I’ve tried to remove it in the msconfig start up utility, but for some strange reason the listing will not allow itself to be unchecked, it just rechecks itself everytime you delete it. Actual line is C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe.
It also gives the registry key, which is HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, but again, you can’t modify or delete this either.

This has totally thrown me, any ideas please?!

Carl

Two routes:

  1. Install avast again, boot, uninstall it using the Control Panel > Add/Remove programs, boot, use the uninstall tool you’ve used before, boot.

  2. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation or even, boot in Safe Mode and use that tool.

By the way, why are you trying to uninstall avast?
Which other antivirus will you use? Is it installed at the moment?

Many thanks for that Tech, will try asap.

Not had great experiences of Avast in the past so I thought I’d remove it and put Avira free on instead (seems to be quite a good one.)

Cheers
