Avast report file

Ok I’ve started using Avast 4 again after I didn’t like the functions before. If you right-click on a folder and Scan folder name, you seen the scan process and the percentage going up but after its finished it doesn’t produce a log file as setup in Report file settings e.g. C:\Temp\Avast.log.

Does anyone have a way of producing the report file?

Hi Keithuk,

For the context scan (right click menu) the results option is disabled by default.
Normally you would just see the scanner (image 1)

Right click avast! tray icon–> program settings–>tick the ‘show results of Explorer Extension’ box.

When you right click a file and scan it, at the end you will see a results box (2nd image)

Is this what you mean or are you wanting an actual log file? - I am not too sure about that…

EDIT I think I know what you mean now… (program settings–> Report File ?)
From what I have seen this doesn’t create a log for the ashQuick scan, although it does for the SUI.
You could select the folder from the interface (it will be longer, but it would produce a report file)

Thanks for the reply Scott. I’ve looked in program settings–>tick the ‘show results of Explorer Extension’ box and ticked it now it shows the results in the message box.

Now when it does a scan in Explorer is always does a Quick Scan. I’ve read in the help file that this can do a Quick Scan, Standard Scan and a Thorough Scan. It says something about

SETTING THE SENSITIVITY
After you select the area to scan, a bar with a slider appears. Moving the slider, you specify the scanner sensitivity. There are three levels:

Quick Scan. Only the possibly dangerous files are scanned, according to their extension. It means that the files with extensions EXE, SCR, COM, DOC, etc. are scanned. Within the file, avast! looks only for those viruses that infect the corresponding type of file. It means that macroviruses are not searched for in EXE files etc.
Standard Scan. Only the possibly dangerous files are scanned, according to their content. The file extension is ignored. Again, only the viruses corresponding to the particular file type are searched for.
Thorough Scan. All files are tested, against all viruses.

I don’t see “After you select the area to scan, a bar with a slider appears.” the slider bar so you can select the different scans?

Thanks for you help Scott.

Hi Keithuk,

As far as I’m aware, the context menu scan is always at the highest sensitivity.

What you are referring to is actually when you select to scan from within the simple user interface

When you select an areas to scan from within the interface, you will see the slider pop up and you can make your chioce from there (like the pic)

Ok Scott I’m with you now. I hate using ashAvast.exe because its not user friendly to me and I’ve checked the Program Setting and I can’t see any reference to it.

I’ve just changed the slider to Thorough and it still does shows a Quick scanner and takes just as long.

Now sorry for being a pain in the backside but I’m new to Avast. On previous anti virus apps that I’ve used McAfee and AVG. I know McAfee does anyway. When it does a scan and finds a virus it used to have to little options popup.

Try and Repair the file (clear virus). Move to quarantine folder. Delete file.

I don’t see any options to show this or try to repair it first. I know it sends it to the Virus Chest but I would like to see something while its scanning.

Thanks again for you help Scott.

Keith.

Hi Keith,

The user friendlyness will be addressed in the new release of avast! 5, but for now you may find it easier to use a different skin
(right click avast! tray icon–> start avast! antivirus → right click on the scanner interface–> select skin - There are also more available on the avast! website)

I am not quite sure what you mean by this? - You mean you changed it to thorough and then tried a right click scan or a scan through the user interface (after selecting the sensitivity press the play button) - The latter of the two is the only part in which the scan levels work.

If an infection is found, you will be shown with an alert similar to the attached image, with options for Move/Rename, Delete, Repair, Move to chest.

Or No Skin at all, from the avast Program Settings (right avast ‘a’ icon), Common section and uncheck ‘Enable skins for Simple User Interface,’ see image.

Ok guys I’ve installed Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1351 now and it appears to act the same as the other version. All the settings are the same but when it finds a threat it doesn’t show the Repair button option as the last version did. I’ve set the ticks as suggested by DavidR.

The ticks as you say, won’t have any impact on not getting a Repair button on the alert, this is just so be able to the Simple User Interface easier for you as you said you didn’t find the other one user friendly.

See attached image, this is what should pop-up upon detection, is this the style of the pop-up ?

The Repair button should be there but will be frequently greyed out as it isn’t possible to repair many infected files.
