I got a message from avast free antivirus saying to update . So i updated and restarted my pc . When i logged in it said setting up desktop. Which was weird . When it loaded i noticed it changed my desktop wallpaper and taskbar menu settings .
The settings were reverted back to the default windows 7 theme .
Also noticed my programs were missing from the start menu and didn’t show up on the side when i opened the start menu . It also reset my default web browser and reverted it back to internet explorer. I had firefox set as my default browser .
So i did system restore to change it back to my old settings .Is there a option in the avast settings to prevent it from interfering with my settings and resetting them ?
I had turned off auto updates so it wasn’t any update that did this . But I’m still not sure what caused it i didn’t do any updates when that happened . Everything seems to be back to normal and i updated avast . Nothing has changed since .
Hi - I’m new here and have come across your post whilst searching for an answer to this very problem. After an Avast update this weekend, all my computer settings were wiped exactly as per your description above and many of programs would now not run. I have accounts and payroll software running on this computer and they were not usable until Avast was uninstalled from the computer. Spent the afternoon on the phone to IT to try and get things operational again. Wasn’t a windows update that caused the problem, almost certain it was Avast.
This just happened to me as well. My avast was expired for a month or less when I renewed. With the renewal came an update, which looked like a Windows update to me, that changed my background and rearranged/remove many desktop files. I am looking for an explanaition and I can’t seem to find one. This forum is the only thing I can find that is recent and involves the desktop situation. Were you able to understand the problem?
The desktop and other settings reverting back was a direct result of a Windows update.
Windows updates in the background and waits for a reboot for those changes to take place.
The fact that you also needed to update Avast at the same time was simply a coincidence.
