Avast resident scanners???

Can someone who really knows this program help me.

Avast has the following resident scanners:

Internet Mail
Outlook/Exchange
Instant Messaging
Network Shield
P2P Shield
Standard Shield

I use my PC for video intensive apps and want the least protection possible. Especially background stuff that scans everything while I work.

Most critical to me is email scanning as this is how I find, most viruses are introduced.

So, can I’d like to terminate the most agressive memory scanner of the lot, so should I get rid of:

Instant Messaging
Network Shield
P2P Shield
Standard Shield

and just leave

Internet Mail
Outlook/Exchange

I’m really not sure of the difference between Network and Standard shield and P2P for that matter (is that if you use Kazzaa or something??)

I never use instant messaging of any kind, so I guess I can get rid of that.

Anyhow, any help here appreciated.

I highly recommend that you read the avast help file for detailed info on each provider.

And if you still need help post back.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Whilst email is a high threat, you shouldn’t discount the Internet (Blaster/Sasser/MS Exploits, etc.) as a minimum I would recommend, Standard Shield and mail protection, if you have a good firewall program or hardware firewall.

Internet Mail - Most pop3/smtp internet mail programs (web based taken care of by Standard Shield)
Outlook/Exchange - Only required if you are using MS Outlook or Exchange as your email program.
Instant Messaging - Not required if you don’t use IM.
Network Shield - Is and IDS not a firewall, but not 100% required if using hardware/software firewall.
P2P Shield - Not required if you don’t use P2p.
Standard Shield - Required, can be temporarily paused/disabled during intensive video ops, if not on-line.
