Avast runs memory test and starts the main program when receiving files in MSN.
Hi there I am a very happy user of Avast home edition. But recently after an update Avast runs a memory test and then starts the main program for each file I download with MSN messenger.
It makes my computer Really slow and it’s quite annoying.
An update that would fix this “error” or “bug” would be very appreciated.

It only does that because the user has input the wrong file to scan downloads through MSN.

The correct file is, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe and not ashAvast.exe as someone has put.

I have both ashAvast.exe and ashQuick.exe.
Should I delite ashAvast.exe?

Remove the entry into MSN setting.
Not delete the file itself.

Help a n00b hahaha. How do I do that?

Hopefully everything is now as it should be ?

Welcome to the forums.

  1. Click Tools → Options in MSN Messenger.
  2. In the left pane, click File Transfer.
  3. In the right pane, check the box Scan for viruses using.
  4. Add C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

Thank you  now I can start avast again

I don’t get it whats the point of using ashQuick when there is much much more elegant IM Shield?! ???
Makes no sense.

I’m not sure but I think it’s because MSN blocks sending of EXEs if there’s no antivirus defined by this way.

Just install integrated Microsoft antivirus. This way 2 different antiviruses scan the attachements and you can send EXE files as usual.
Imo far better option than just ashQuick…

What’s that? Windows Defender?
Sorry, I do not use MSN…

For some reason I can’t get Avast to start eny services :P. It says 7 Services are available 0 running. And then I klick on Run protection or I don’t know the English term for it I use the Swedish version And it just won’t start. What is wrong?

You should create your own topic as your question is unrelated to this topic.

Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the avast! 4 Home/Pro forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

It’s a sort of little Microsoft OneCare which is integrated to MSN and scans the files received, I guess.
