I ran a system hard drive scan (Win XPh), and Avast says that c:\system volume information_restore{<long class ID number which I don’t have access to>} is infected. Because SVI is a protected folder I can’t upload the file to Jotti.
Anyone have a clue what to do here? I’m tempted to move it to the Chest and see what happens.
There wouldn’t be a problem in moving it to the chest, after all the SVI folder/restore points are inert until you use system restore to go back.
If this is an old restore point, I would tend to do a bit of house keeping, create a clean restore point (assuming no infection outside of the SVI folder) and clear all old restore points. This would be also likely to free up a large chunk of disk space.
Create Clean Restore Point - Clear old Restore Points.
Now create a clean System Restore point:
Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, System Restore.
In the pop-up that appears fill in the radio button to Create a Restore Point
Click NEXT
Enter a useful name that you will remember if you need to find this again (Clean Restore Point)
Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, you should clear the old ones:
Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, Disk Clean Up
Click OK on the C: drive
Click the More Options tab
In the System Restore section click the Clean Up button
Fantastic reply, David. I went through that process verbatim. I wish I had taken note of the disk size beforehand, because I think I removed a whole bunch of dead wood from the drive, which is excellent.
I then scanned the SVI folder and got no hits. The log says 34 files and 6 folders were scanned, but no Log setting (info, debug, eg) shows more detail than that for some reason.
I used a file/folder scan via the full Simple interface. The log said about 56Mb were processed, and it happened in about one second, but the log info was only cursory.
Tech, that did it perfectly. The scan also ran to 85Mb this time, but I suppose something got added to the directory somehow. I’m not sure why two settings locations affect the log file, but IAC it’s working fine. I searched the log for the .dll that had caused problems and it was not there, even with “Show OK files” checked. I guess the file was deleted when I cleaned up previous Restore Points.
