I bought a download option which gave me a licence file it worked for 3 months then says its invalid

For it to work for three months and then get an invalid license file, is normally associated a cracked license that has now been invalidated.
If it was a genuine license purchased via the avast web site. Then you could try a repair of avast:
Vista, win7 or later - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
