Avast says updates are available, then says everything is up to date.

Avast 5.0.377
Virus Definitions: 100228-0 (at the time of this post)

Yesterday and today Avast popped-up a window telling me that there are Avast updates available.

Both times I clicked Update, but it never gets past Step 1 before telling me that both my Engine and Definitions are up to date.

If I can’t trust Avast to know when it’s up to date, who can I trust?

Any idea why that’s happening?

Thanks!

it should read 100307 for V def and 5.0.454 for program
try d/ling the program update manually from here

I have had exactly same situation as DerbyDad03 !!

A bit scary since , I dont dare to think how many 1000’s users that stucked on the older version , but think they are up to date.

Best regards
Kim

First guys, don’t report the latest release as 5.0.454 as the is a pre-release build, the latest regular release available is 5.0.418.

For both DerbyDad03 & icekiller

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual virus definitions version.

Once you have done that, do a manual check for Program updates as that should do a more painless program update and it also updates virus definitions. If you are impatient then you can download the pre-release version 5.0.454 as mentioned, but my advice is wait for a regular program update.

It’s probably already posted elsewhere (I typically start with oldest unread posting first, haven’t made it to page 1 yet), but as of this morning or maybe last night, latest regular release is .462.

Yes it is reported in a couple of topics and 5.0.462 is now available from the avast 5.0 UI Program update.

Hi

just for your information , I dont have a repair option , only uninstall .
but it ok , I just download the new version and then install from scratch

thanks for a good product.

Best regards

If you don’t have a Repair option, then there is something wrong with that installation. Though I don’t know where you were looking for it, after clocking the Change/Remove button another window should pop-up, you need to scroll down the list to the Repair option.

I don’t have Repair option either.

After clicking Change/Remove the only option is Uninstall. There is nothing else listed and nothing to scroll down to.

@ DerbyDad03 and icekiller

A clean install of avast! V5 would be best.

Please read the answer in Another freeze problem:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55781.msg482154#msg482154

Which to my mind indicates that you installation is incomplete, so a clean install as YoKenny would probably be the best option now.

I will do a new install, but of course that raises the proverbial question of “trust”.

If one can’t trust the application to install itself correctly, even after it says the installation was successful and updates are successful, etc. how can one trust it when it says my system is protected?

In other words, what else could be “incomplete” about the installation that I might never notice?

I’m not trying to upset fans of avast! but you have to admit that the trust issue raises it’s ugly head in this situation.

I have trusted avast for 6 years and no problems.

There is no way anyone can say how incomplete, just that what you are seeing isn’t correct, if there were any thing related to security then I would expect rear it head in the form of error messages, etc.

But that’s kind of my point - in an argument that I know we can never resolve:

If “what I am seeing isn’t correct” how do I know what else is wrong that I’m not seeing any indication of?

We know something isn’t right because I am missing certain components - i.e. the Repair utility. How do I know I’m not missing the component that would tell me if there was a problem with the virus engine or definitions?

As a matter of fact, just after I found that I didn’t have the Repair component, I tied to manually run the Update from the system tray icon. The progress bar hasn’t moved past the ~1% mark all night. It was still sitting at Step 1 of 3 when I left for work this morning. No errors, and no update.

So we obviously know that my installation is flawed even though I have never once been presented with an error. Why would I have faith that a “protection problem” would produce an error if a bad install and the inability to update don’t produce any errors - all while avast is telling me that my system is protected? How can I “trust” that avast really knows that my system is protected when it apparently it doesn’t know that it itself is broken?

@ DerbyDad03
How can you trust anything on your computer as essentially you don’t have a full understanding of what it is doing either.

Your system, your choice you know know there is something wrong with the installation, what you do about it is up to you, we have suggested what to do, your choice.

we suggest here according to what is happening to our system, if applicable to you then grab it
but think this also that the stability of my system is not the same of your system. because what you have installed another software there
may do not have in other computer that giving advice. every computer has their own conflict.

it may have expert tech here but it is difficult to troubleshoot the system by typing a words only
that’s why whatever you suffer from your system you need to tell to everybody here.
so they can give you any point of view, comment, solution, or their experience about the product.

the satisfaction and trust is in the user.
we cannot tell you about what is trust
observe if ok then trust it
what is the purpose of 1 month demo of product if you buy it without trying if this security software is stable to your system?
