avast scan always blocks / turns empty after some time

Hi,

When performing a full scan of my computer it always blocks at a certain point and turns from then on for hours while always scanning the same file. This happens very often when scanning the logfile of the system volume information (20KB!). When doing a scan at startup there is no problem detected. I downloaded then another AV-programme to check and this one is also blocking. I thought it might be a problem with the firewall (zone alarm) and switched it off while unplugging the internet connection, but the result is the same.
I had some recent Trojan findings on my machine due to my son visiting a streaming video site for TV series. These were HTML:Skin Trim-A and Win32:Small-NBQ. They have been put into quarantine.

Any hint would be welcome!
Many thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums Lem,

Please take time to answer these questions:

(1) What are your computer specs?
(2) What are your current antivirus(es)?
(3) What are your previous antivirus(es)?

Hi L’Arc

Many thanks.
Wrt your questions please see below
(1) What are your computer specs?
XP SP3, AMD 64/3000+, 2Gb RAM, 2HDD, 4 partitions (60/60/150/150), C 60 Gb (2/3 free), some quite old Radeon 9600
(2) What are your current antivirus(es)?
actually due to this problem I have also installed Avira AntiVir free edition, but normally I use the Avast private use ed v 4.8
(3) What are your previous antivirus(es)?
Avast latest version (updated whenever suggested). I also use in addition a fire wall, Zone Alarm (built 7.0.483.000)

Need anything else?

[font=Segoe UI] Thank you for your time answering those questions, from there I could say that:

(1) Please use only one antivirus, 2 or more would not produce better results but worse. If you are to remove one, please notify us so we could provide extensive removal steps to eliminate possible remnants.

(2) Nothing else seems wrong. Please consider telling us the file (filename & location) it usually stops at, if possible, send it to VirusTotal. Please give us a link to the results.
Lastly, we could say that this could also be a malware activity.

Hi L’Arc,

Thanks for your advice. The problem is that I can’t even make a copy of the file, nor append it to an e-mail. The file concerned is the tracking.log from the system volume information. No way to scan it, no way to copy it. Any idea?

I also can’t access the whole folder of the system volume information on my E drive, but at least I can scan it. There it tells me that the folder is 0 Kb???

[font=Segoe UI] Hi again Lem,

Sorry, I could not be of much help by this time since all I could only think of by now is clearing system restore points. Please wait for some more knowledgeable advice about this. I believe there would be a better fix for this.

For the meantime, have you made up your mind on what AV to keep between avast & avira?

Me again, thanks L’Arc.

I had already made my mind up before because I only had installed the avira product to check whether it would block on the same file or be able to get on. When this didn’t work I have uninstalled the avira using their uninstall tool. Their offer is just less complete and doesn’t have an e-mail scan like avast in its free version. I had actioned this before getting your generous offer to give some advice on the best way to do avoid unwanted “remainders”.

Regards
