Avast Scan problems

Hello,

As a longer term user of Avast, i would like to start by thanking you for the wonderful product you have and the great technical support!

Recently I have had few very serious problems with viruses; I’ve always performed regular scans and try to keep my firewall/spyware software up to date too. This was the case until yesterday. My girlfriend opened a pdf file to view a piste map of a resort she was planning to go to and my computer froze completely. Attempts to reboot were mixed with the computer freezing after around 5-10 mins.

Here are the solutions that i have tried:

  • Avast boot time scan => scan started successfully but froze on a particular file.

  • I uninstalled the file (apple updater programme) and restarted Avast. The scan then contiuned for around 15 mins and then hung up on another file…Avast (or the system) crashes whether i have started Avast in a normal Windows session or boot time scan mode.

  • I had problems starting in Safe mode as windows would not always start.

  • I am a little stuck as to how to proceed…

  • I was thinking of doing a system restore to see if things would improve. What would you recommend?

  • I have received no warnings regarding infected files from Avast so i am unsure whether my problem is in fact a virus or a software/hardware problem.

If you do not think that this is an Avast problem, i would be very grateful of any advice or direction (other sites, etc) you could provide.

Best regards,

Christopher

a) what is your OS?
b) can you post here the content of boot time scan log?

Sounds like a hardware problem to me… cooling, memories, HDD… something like that.

Hello,

Thanks for your quick replies!

I’m using Windows XP SP2.

As for the boot time scan log, how can i find it? I cannot supply it until this evening due to not be at home.

Thanks again for your help.

Christopher

As for the boot time scan log, how can i find it?
The report file is created automatically in \Data\Report\aswBoot.txt

Here is the result of the boot time scan:

01/16/2008 22:29
Scan of all local drives

It doesn’t seem to have really worked…i’ll try again and report back.

Best regards,

Christopher
