Avast Scan report brings up Media Player

I did a routine complete scan. No files were infected. When I tried to open the file to see the scan report or results, the Windows Media Player popped up. No scan results ever would appear. I would close the player and redo and it still appeared. The player would not open to play anything. What do I need to do to clear this up?
I had previously run a Spybot and it was clean.

Windows XP(no SP2) ZA Spybot

How exactly did you open the report file?

With what is the .log file extension associated?

I am sorry to have posted such a large picture. I didn’t think anyone would believe me without the picture and didn’t realize it would be so big. Please delete it if you want.

I never was able to open up a report file. The scan finished. I clicked on the line that says to review the file and as you see the media player and the other box popped up.

I then did several short scans of selected files and the same thing happened. I rebooted and scanned and still the media player appeared.
I did a complete disk check this morning and then did a avast short scan and the same thing happened.
When I go to Start,Explore,Avast and go to some previous reports and try to open them, the same thing comes.

Please give me specific directions on how to find the “.log file extension associated”. I am not experienced in knowing that.

Thank you

The “View Scan Reports…” command does exactly the same as if you (double)clicked on the report file in Windows Explorer - i.e. it tries to “open” the file. The report file has (by default) .txt extension… it’s rather strange that you’d have Media Player associated to .txt extension, but everything is possible, of course.

Start Windows Explorer, select e.g. your C: drive, and select Tools / Folder Options from menu. Switch to the page “File Types” and scroll to “TXT” extension (Text Document). Now, you can check what application is this filetype associated to. Normally, it’s something like “Notepad”; it looks that you have Media Player there.

Hi emma:
Left click on My computer then select Tools/Folder/Options/File Types and look for log. It should say Text file. If not, select change and another window will open. fine Notepad and check the box that says:
Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
and then click on ok.
That should allow you to see your log files in notepad.

I did as you suggested and found something to switch to Notepad and now I can read the scan file!! I have no idea why I even want to read the scan file because it is Greek to me, but it is comforting to know it is there…as long as it says No Infected Files. Remember in the old comedies where you turn on the stove and the toaster pops up? That’s what it felt like. Hope when I play a song avast doesn’t pop up.

Thanks.

Hi emma:

Hope when I play a song avast doesn't pop up.
Glad it's fixed. Have you tried playing a song?
