Avast scanner freezes at 51%

OS: XP pro, SP3

Avast version: 4.8 professional (build 4.8.1368)
VDB: 091227-1

Scan specs= Thorough scan, plus archives.
Amount of used disk space on system: 139 GB

I set up a scan last night before I went to bed. When I woke up, the scan had frozen at 51%. Of note is that it stalled on a personal file from school, not a system file or anything like that, and its a file which has not been accessed since I opened it myself.

I actually had to reboot the computer, that is how badly it froze. (pause/stop did nothing.) When I rebooted, the avast log showed nothing.

I honestly don’t know if I have some sort of virus, or if it’s something else. I do know that I have been witnessing some odd behavior yesterday. (after I had not had my system running since before I left for xmas on the 24th) Although this really isn’t the correct forum to go into detail about it. I do know that I had Spyware Dr. do a scan, and it found nothing.

Anyone had this problem?

Im going to try another scan tonight and omit the directory that it failed on, to see if it still causes an error.

What was the file it froze on?

I don’t exactly recall which file specifically it is. (I have a series of files with the same name, indexed 01, 02, etc. to indicate different versions, (avast cropped the filename) but they are .fla files. (it’s a project file format for macromedia flash files.)

Normally they average around 13 megs or so. Avast has never had a problem with these files before. In fact, avast has never frozen on me before.

Im going to try to recreate the error, by having it scan that entire directory and see if it freezes. Ill update after it’s done.
