Avast scanner not opening

I’m running a Windows XP Pro 3.4Ghz Intel custom built box. My avast is version 4.7. It is able to scan files if I right click on them and ask it to scan them. It also alerts me when it finds a virus on my computer. But if I want to scan my hard drive I can not. I go to Star avast! antivirus and the memory test comes up then just disapears. When I shut down my computer the scanner pops up then closes for shut down. I figure this must be a conflicting program but I’m not sure which one. Do you guys have a list of conflicting programs?

 The only "conflicting programs" I know are other
 antivirus programs, either their presence or remnants of
 prior AV's !? Tell us the recent "history" of antivirus
 programs and/or "Internet Security Suite(s)" on this
 computer .

I have ZoneAlarm installed, not pro just normal ZoneAlarm. I have never had any other firewall or antivrus installed. Nor have I had any internet suites installed.

Edit: I uninstalled ZoneAlarm and installed Comodo. So now I just have Comodo and Avast for my Firewall/Antivirus.
