A thorough scan with archives enabled scans 50gb of my computer But there around 80gb of data on the hard drive?
hey I think that avast is skipping files that are bigger then X MB or something like that. when its default setting are used. that can be a reason for it or avast wont be able to scan the last 30 GB meaby it couldn’t get access to them or it have files avast can’t scan. that what I think can be the problem here. lets wait and see if someone can confirm me theories here.
avast doesn’t have a setting to exclude large files.
If you have excluded some areas of the hard drive, like media files, etc. then that would make a difference.
Personally - Thorough is also by its design very thorough (it scans all files) and perhaps a little overkill for routine use, were a Standard scan without archives should be adequate. Archive (zip, rar, etc.) files are by their nature are inert, you need to extract the files and then you have to run them to be a threat. Long before that happens avast’s Standard Shield should have scanned them and before an executable is run that is scanned.
I have only ever done a Through Scan with Archives once shortly after installation just to ensure a clean start state, but with XP for example avast will do a boot-time scan after installation if you select it, this I believe will be quicker and reasonably effective. Like everything in life things are a compromise.
I run vista 64bit. I haven`t really excluded anything at all.
I don`t know why avast only scans 50gb.
I don’t either without access to your system.
However, I certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep over it as I wouldn’t be running a thorough scan with archives to start with unless as I said it was the first run of avast after installation, or I suspected something.
What does the report file say about files that couldn’t be scanned?
There are no files that coud’nt be scanned it only scans 50/80gb the only files that wereen’t scanned were some password protected archives belonging to SAS.
Password protected files such as those mentioned can not be scanned since avast has no way of knowing the password. You have nothing to worry about.
