I was surfing the web and Avast told me that a connection had been blocked. I closed chrome (the browser) and then did a full computer scan. The only results I got were that a number of .dll files within the Alwil Software/Avast5/Defs/10070401 could not be scanned because of “Error: system cannot find the path specified (3).” Is this something I should worry about? Should I be scared? The specific files were algo.dll, aswcmnbs.dll, aswcmnis.dll, aswcmnos.dll, aswengin.dll, and aswscan.dll, all located under the previously listed filepath (C:\program files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Defs\10070401
And, just out of curiosity, anybody know what the “Safest” browser is? Is it firefox or chrome?
When avast updates the virus definitions it creates a new folder in the defs folder, which equates th that definitions version number. After a period of time avast will clear the old redundant folder and its contents. It just so happens that that happened after you initiated the scan.
Personally my feeling is that firefox is safer and that is because it also has additional security add-ons that enhance its security, such as NoScript and RequestPolicy to name two.
Chrome is less of a target at present given its market share, which would reduce exposure. But that could change as it becomes more popular.
So for the most part it is personal preference and I chose firefox for its additional configurations and huge number of add-ons available to help you get the best out of your browser and how you use it. Whilst chrome will say it is quicker, I found that it was but not hugely, I just couldn’t live with the interface, lack of configurability and add-ons.
