Just in the last 2 or 3 weeks, my Avast Screen Saver has started having a problem. Every time it tries to kick in, I get the message that AVASTSS.scr has encountered a problem. I am running XP Media edition. Any advice?
Thanks,
RC
Can you post the full text of the error or a screenshot of the error, it may point to other elements. There may be something in the windows event logs.
Has anything changed in the last 2-3 weeks, a windows update perhaps ?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
Thanks for your reply. I tried repairing Avast as per your instructions, but the problem still persists. As for possible changes in the last 2-3 weeks, there could have been a Windows update and/or an Avast update. I am attaching a screenshot of the error message and also the error signature. Any further thoughts?

Thanks, from this the faulting module is msvcr71.dll and I remember this from previous forum topics. A search of these forums for msvcr71.dll will no doubt return some information.
This is just one of them:
You can check the topic for resolution confirmations.
I tried the Run, type sfc /scannow, but no corrupt files were found. While searching the forum I found that one person resolved this problem by renistalling Avast. Would I need to uninstall my current Avast before reinstalling?

Yes it is always best to uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
However, I have my doubts as to this as a solution as it won’t do anything with msvcr71.dll which is a windows dll.
