the screensaver on winxp home sp2 come on and ends instantly or the screensaver runs but the scanner box does not or it crashes and windows wants to send an error report.

Well the module at fault is “ModName: msvcr71.dll” and not actually the avast screen saver, so you may need to update this dll or check and see if it isn’t corrupt.
I suggest a forums search for msvcr71.dll as I believe this has been covered before.
problem solved by avast reinstall
