There are other possible explanations to the slow service, like high traffic time on that particular server, ISP issues and website availability just to mention a couple.
I’ve used many VPN’s over the years and have not noticed any ‘overly’ lengthy connection or service times with Avast VPN lately.
As Eddy suggested, try one of the other numerous server possibilities.
