I noticed that when using Avast Security Ultimate on my Android phone and setting the VPN on, that the VPN stopped WhatsApp from working when on my home WiFi. WhatsApp messages were being transmitted via the mobile network. As the mobile signal around my home is poor, WhatsApp messages were delayed by hours. Switch off the VPN, and the problem dissappeared!
