Just downloaded Avast! free on my new Acer aspire One D250 netbook (with windows XP). Before Avast! the comp seemed to be running fine as it has 118 MB of free space left. I have version 5.0.594, and tehe latest update (100904-1) but I keep on bumping my head against the wall with this scan issue ::). On this forum, I read about many instances of Avast! ‘hanging’ on a particular file but with me its more like hanging and freezing (first avast freezes and after a minute the whole system freezes and I have to restart manually (which is never a good thing but the only option since I cannot access task manager).
Do you have any advice for me? is there some sort of ‘light’ version of Avast! free?
Thanks!
as you can see from my signatur, i am running AIS and MBAM pro on a Lenovo netbook and does not notice any problem…
Acer machines is usually delivered with an AV preinstalled when new, have you uninstalled it or any other AV you have used ?
have you run a removal tool to clean all leftovers after the uninstall ?
you can find removal tools here http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
Yeah it came with McAfee trial AV. The reason I uninstalled it was cause I couldn’t activate it…which sucks
Do I have to uninstall Avast! free before I run the removal tool or can I just run it now directly?
nope Pondus, that doesnt work either, the removal tool didn’t even seem to start working, after like half an hour the comp froze again :-[ Dunno if its something to do with the virtual memory, then again I wasn’t running any other programs either.
NO Light version… and you are not alone.
Far more instances of machine takeover then acceptable.
Avast is not a low maintainance software program.
Compared to other security/AV software programs I’ve used and tested over the last 20 years, Avast is absolutely the “Heaviest”…especially on older XP operating systems 8)
I Have No Problem With Avast.

Sound’s like you need to add some xtra ram Wilpower, avast 5.0.594 is probably the lightest av out there. A good clean of your system with something like ccleaner and getting rid of any old programs that you dont use would also help.
