Is there a way to increase the time that the Avast self protection is disabled for? Every time I turn it off to edit the Avast ini file Avast reenables it only moments later. Well, if I make a single edit in the ini file and save changes I am then unable to save the file again after that as the file is once again protected. Checking in the Avast settings the option is checked, reenabled by itself. Irritating. It should stay off for as long as I choose to disable it for.
It does that here.

Well it doesn’t here, so I still don’t know why.
Are you sure it is self protection?
What is the error you get?
If you are on vista/7 you need to run notepad as admin otherwise the edit will not be savable.
Well, you can edit the files in safe mode.

Yeah, I’m sure, and been doing this for a while ;)…and besides, I’m on XP…and I just realised what it was that was screwing around with Avast. Avast was being interfered with by SnoopFree Privacy Shield. It was blocking screen access to AvastUI.exe so not really Avast’s fault. So it seems Avast needs access to the screen to work its stuff. I’ve just added Avast to SnoopFree’s Access control list so it can read the screen and now the setting stays disabled…and I also now get a warning from Avast which I hadn’t seen before asking me if I wanted to modify the ini file or something…and that was before disabling the self protection. Well at least I know Snoop is working for me ;D
Anyhow, thanks Asyn and spg SCOTT
You’re welcome…!

Well you can cut out the middle man completely as there is no need to disable the self-defence module to edit the avast ini file if you use notepad. When you go to save the changes, the self-defence module should simply ask for confirmation on the changes.
Hello DavidR,
Yes, I just discovered that after allowing AvastUI screen access in SnoopFree; I didn’t get the Avast notice before as SnoopFree was not allowing Avast to produce it. But now I know I don’t need to pull Avast’s trousers down to get into its pockets I’ll just use notepad and confirm changes when Avast prompts me to in future.
Thanks.
You’re welcome.
