avast! service GUI component has encountered a problem...

avast! service GUI component has encountered a problem and needs to close.

That’s the error i get every time i right click on the avast icon and click on any of the options; the GUI crashes.

The processes, however, remain running.

I’ve tried a uninstall > reboot > reinstall

I’ve tried safe mode > uninstall > reboot > reinstall

And i’ve tried uninstalling > disabling system restore > reboot > reinstall. (Found that “solution” on google.)

Anyways googling the error didn’t give me much, so i was hoping the avast forums could shed some light on this problem.

Thanks,

Sorry, this one is not good. It won’t harm, but seems stupid.

Which was your old antivirus? How did you uninstall it?
Any other security program that could interfere?

I’ve only ever used avast, nothing before.

Now your wondering how I’ve had avast this whole time and suddenly this problem started happening.

Well to make the story short, This is my sister’s laptop, it got really messed (driver issues and the works) so i did a “recover file integrity” (or whatever its called) option on the windows xp disk, and now the avast GUI wont open.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.
