Since updating to v2014.9.0.2016, the Avast service shuts itself down randomly, usually within a couple hours of restarting it. A full scan shows no problems detected.
Repair avast!:
- Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
- Click on ‘Repair’.
- Follow instructions.
- Reboot.
I ran Repair and rebooted but the Avast service is still shutting itself down randomly.
- OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
- Other security related software installed…??
- Which AV(s) did you use before avast!..??
Windows 7 Home Premium, SP 1, 64-bit
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free, installed but not running. I only run it occasionally but the real-time protection is not available in the free version. However, a week or so ago, I updated from version 1.x to version 2.x. I will uninstall it and see if it resolve the problem with Avast.
I’ve only used Avast AV on this PC.
OK, please report back.
I uninstalled Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and Repaired Avast once again but the problem continued.
So I backed up my Avast settings and uninstalled then reinstalled Avast, and imported my settings back in.
For the last day or so, I have not noticed the Avast service shutting itself down.
If I do experience the problem again, I will uninstall and reinstall Avast again but leave the default settings initially to see if that resolves the problem.
Just had the same problem today . For no reason Avast (v2014.9.0.2016) just shut down and/or would not restart . Repair did not work and had to uninstall/reinstall .
This problem and the other recent “url:mal dsply.com blocked” problem from the latest update is getting me abit p.oed about having to fuss with my virus protection on a daily basis . Com’on Avast you can do MUCH better … get with the program(ing)!!!
Things had been going well for several days but just today, the Avast service shut itself down again. After performing a complete uninstall/reinstall, I’m out of ideas and open to suggestions.
We know you have MalwareBytes Free and avast! free, what other security software do you have now or “ever” had?
Firewall? Pre-loaded antivirus? Anti-Spyware?
If uninstalled how was it removed?
Did you use the avast uninstall tool?
@srereo55 You should start your own thread as your issue may not be the same as the OP’s.
I uninstalled Malwarebytes Free as one of my very first troubleshooting steps using Revo Uninstaller, and verified all remnants of it were removed. I have Comodo Firewall installed but do not have their antivirus installed (and never have had it installed). I’ve never had any other antivirus or other security software installed with this installation of Windows.
I uninstalled Avast using its own uninstaller and then manually removed remnants left over in “user” directories. I will try to uninstall using the Avast uninstall tool and reinstall.
I uninstalled Avast with the Avast uninstall tool and reinstalled but the Avast service continues to shut itself down once every 4-5 days or so. Any other troubleshooting suggestions would be appreciated.
You could try the latest beta: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=148633.0
Same problems here recently under Windows 7 64 bits, avast randomly shut itself down after a few reboot, it can be re-enabled again after a manual repair. No such problem for avast under Windows 7 32 bits on my other machine.
I’m also having problems with Avast shutting down sporadically, on average about every 15 to 30 minutes at times. Not sure how frequently for the most part because there is no notification that it has dropped out. Only if I remember to manually monitor it do I find that it is not working much of the time.
When I try to do a system scan it can drop out w/o finishing, so I can’t determine, as yet, if it is a virus.
Is this a virus or a bug?!!!
Thanks!

I have another problem. after installing Avast 2014 today. I have no idea related it to Avast service or not, but after install laptop shut down itself without warnig on begining initial Avast scan… And then it continuously start shut down on reboot at time when Avast start load. No any other security software installed or have traces in system. Healty and clean OS. I first time ever got this problem.
