I need some help please.

I had to do a system restore recently (XP) and since then Avast, the free version, is not working for me.

I found an older thread on this (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=81582.0) which describes what I’m experiencing in the opening post, but unfortunately none of the solutions work for me. I tried Revo uninstaller, but no luck. I am completely stuck.
The only thing I haven’t tried properly is uninstalling it through Aswclear, which is to be done in windows safe mode, but I don’t know how to do that.

  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

Thanks, I’ve actually tried that already, but I’m stuck on your number 2 - having problems doing this in safe mode. I press F8 when restarting and choose windows XP but then nothing happens and when I use the uninstall .exe it just says it can’t do that as it has to be done in safe mode.
Can you explain the safe mode (sorry)?

Yes! That seems to have worked, I’m just in the process of re-installing it now.
