Avast Service using 49,000 handles and climbing

The last number of days, I’ve been getting alerts on my Windows PC that too many handles are being used up. It appears that there is handle leak on the AvastSvc service, as I have been booted about 2 days, 16 hours, and it is using up over 49,700 handles and growing. Anybody else seeing this? --David

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premium)

As of now, been up 3 days, 11 hours, AvastSvc process using 71,957 handles…

Repair Avast:

  1. Avast GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting
  2. Click on ‘REPAIR APP’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Thank you, Asyn.

Did what you said. Not sure it helped. System rebooted 5.25 hours ago. AvastSvc process is up to ~15,000 handles and growing. . . .

Thanks, --David

You’re welcome. Report back in a few days.

Hi,

Doing the Repair APP suggestion does not seem to have affected the Avast Service’s run-away usage of handles.

The system has been up 3 days and 2 hours now, and the AvastSvc service is now using 61,799 handles. And growing.

Am I really the only one seeing this behavior with the Avast Service on his Windows computer? --David

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I got same issue from my clients. They are using Avast business on window 7.
