Avast Service will not start.

Hello,

I’ve used avast for years and have never had a single problem, until a few days ago…

I booted up my pc like always, but this time noticed the red ‘x’ over avast in the system tray. I checked to see the problem and it said the avast service is off. So I tried to start it, no luck. Asks for admin permission, but that’s it.

So I googled and followed a few fixes posted here. Uninstalled avast around 5 times, with clean install. Used a fresh installation, nothing fixes it. I even attempted to use an older version as someone said worked for them to no avail.

One thing I did notice is when I attempted to uninstall via the Control Panel, once it reached the end and tried to launch VisthAux.exe, it would just hang in that state forever. This would make me restart the computer and use the avast clean tool.

Is there any way to fix this? As of right now I have uninstalled avast.

Thanks so much, I just really would like to get this wonderful program working again!

I am running windows 7 home edition with service patch 1, btw.

Any help?

do you have more then one AV installed?
was previous used AV removed with that vendors removal tool?

I have more than one AV installed, but avast is still working fine.

Why Using Multiple Antivirus Programs is a Bad Idea http://blog.kaspersky.com/multiple-antivirus-programs-bad-idea/

removal tools is recomended to be used to clear all conflicting files

I am not using them concurrently, I enable only one at a time.

There are still some low level drivers that can conflict.

still not good enough bc of how AV install

How can I ascertain whether there is software conflict? I have not seen it so far.

Basically, you can’t, until you run into problems. Excerpt from the FAQ:

When and why a third-party antivirus software should be uninstalled?
If you want to install avast! antivirus software on your computer, please ensure that there is no any other third-party antivirus software already installed. Running multiple antivirus programs on the same computer can cause conflicts, that usually result in false positive detections, performance degradation and system instability. Therefore it is strongly recommended to uninstall all other previously installed antivirus applications before installing avast! on your computer.

I uninstalled the previous AV before installation of avast, thereafter I installed another one, which will be uninstalled if problems arise.

Well, finally it’s your decision anyway.

It won’t be too late if another AV is uninstalled after problems arise, correct?

Can’t promise.

Why run the risk? Better safe than sorry.
If problems arise, it is too late.

I hope it is a good risk. The other one is developed by the Chinese and I should give it a go because I am Chinese.

No, I’ve only ever had Avast installed. I do have MalwareBytes installed but it’s not a active shield, I only use it to run scans on my system every now and then. I’ve had both installed for over a year now, with no problems.

Have you tried System Restore?

Yeah, with no luck. I hadn’t changed anything on my system. It just started one day on boot up.

Are you sure that avast was thoroughly uninstalled before reinstallation? The Add/Remove Programs may be unable to do the job well.

I am running windows 7 home premium with service pack 1, btw.
