Avast services not starting

Hi guys,

I recently installed Avast on a laptop as an attempt to remove some viruses.
Once I had installed it I come across an issue where the services would not start, and applying fix to get the program to do it for me has failed. Is this a fault with avast, the laptop or some virus blocking the system from enabling the services and if so, is there a way to diagnose this to find out which one and why?

Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

I guess this is probably in the wrong section but if it is then could someone move it to the correct one please.

Thanks,

Ant

What os/sp?
What exact version of avast?
Is there (or was there) any other malware removal software on the system?
If so, which one(s) and/or how did you remove it?

Windows Vista SP 2

Avast prog ver. 2014.9.0.2021
Definitions won’t update due to services not running.
No other malware removal software present, although there was an previous out-of-date AVAST program on there, and remnants of mcafee and norton.

Just used add and remove programs to uninstall them which obviously failed in some capacity.

I recently installed Avast on a laptop as an attempt to remove some viruses.
and how did you know you had a virus? what program detected it? what was the Malware name given .... and location of detected file(s) .... full file path if you have

Was told by family that something detected it, unsure of what detected it or what it was as i wasnt informed specifics sorry. I know that doesnt help too much

and remnants of mcafee and norton.
it could be a program conflict

Why Using Multiple Antivirus Programs is a Bad Idea http://blog.kaspersky.com/multiple-antivirus-programs-bad-idea/

got to go … eddy will help you clear that
and you may need to attach a diagnostic log for a removal expert to look at

Three things to do to start with.
1)
Remove leftovers from Norton and McAcrap
