Avast Settings

Hi

When I download/install another program with Avast! installed, do I have to make any setting changes in Avast! so that Avast! will not interfere with the download/install?

I have Avast! Home Edition 4.6Me OSIE6 SP1

Thanks!!

No, generally not.

If you are using a download manager you could set Avast to scan the downloaded file at completion of download.
The path for your download manager to scan downloaded files is …
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe

Thanks guys for your replies!!

Thanks for the info~~I don’t have a download manager. I may consider getting one later. I’m so new to this computer stuff that I want to learn how to use what is already on my computer before installing any new pregrams. ;D

The reason I ask if I had to change any setting or disable anything in Avast! is that in NAV, (which I unintalled last Sunday before installing Avast!), I had to disable Auto Protect (on the task bar) before installing anything new.

Right now I need to Dowload & install the newsest version of SpywareBlaster, and I want to be sure that Avast! won’t interfere with the downloading or installation.

SOoooo, is it safe to leave both the " i " ball and the " a " ball enabled on the task bar while downloading and installing new programs?? Are there any other settings or adjusments that I need to make in Avast! before downloading and/or installing?

I just want to be sure that I don’t foul up Avast! and/or any program download and/or installation. Sorry to be so paranoid!! ::slight_smile: Being a newbie to computers, I really worry about doing something wrong and fouling things up and then not have a clue how to fix it.

Thanks for your help!!

Added~It just now dawned on me that it sounds like I can not scan my download with Avast! unless I have a download manageris that correct?? I did always scan my downloads with NAV before installing~~hope I can with Avast! also.

For the most part I wouldn’t drop my defenses when downloading software, avast doesn’t block, it scans and if it finds something infected/suspicious it will let you know.

So there should be no need to temporally pause/terminate avast and trust to luck that you don’t get infected during a long download. You can merge the i and a icons into one to save space.

By default avast scans newly created files on your hard drive (they are downloaded to your hard drive). There exceptions to this, files that aren’t deemed a virus risk or archive files which have to be opened, extracted and run before they present a risk and avast will have scanned them before you run/open them.

You can override this by raising the standard shield to High and scan all files, this will use more system resources and you may see a slight reduction in speed.

Hi davidR

I very much appreciate your taking the time to give me a detailed explanation. Now I understand!!

Thanks!!
